Cherished Chinese Proverbs is a bilingual collection of classic stories that have been passed down to generations of Chinese speakers. This work was originally designed as a supplement for students of Chinese as a Second Language, but in this publication we have broadened the focus. In offering these classic stories in both Chinese and English, it is hoped that native Chinese speakers might also benefit. By reading familiar Chinese stories in English, a Chinese student of English may begin to expand his English vocabulary and develop more fluent reading skills.

Let me preface my comment by saying that I don't usually review things, but I'm so satisfied with this book that I decided I should recommend it to potential buyers.I've been studying Mandarin seriously for just over a year (aside from a minor flirtation with it a few years ago) and I can recognize and write and pronounce around 300 characters. I've been itching to use my Mandarin in other ways besides practice lessons, so I wanted to try reading some short stories and gain an insight into the Chinese culture via proverbs and common sayings The stories are short, manageable, and keep it simple with straight-forward language and I can understand maybe 50%-75% of each story without looking up the meaning - the other books of short stories that I've found are a bit long and use more difficult language.
This is a great book! Perfectly suits my Chinese competency.

Cherished Chinese Proverbs A Bilingual Retelling of Ancient Tales eBook Hongchen Wang Dana Risley Reviews
Interesting
I listen to this audio-book mostly while I'm driving; it's delightful! Much of the Mandarin I learned several years ago I've forgotten through lack of use. Listening to the stories in this book re-familiarizes me with the sound of the words and cadence of the language. The speakers' voices are clear and their pace is perfect. The stories are both entertaining and educational, revealing some of China's rich cultural heritage, an extra bonus. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning Mandarin.
I am so delighted to find this audiobook for my intermediate level Mandarin students. There are so many textbooks and supplemental materials out there for language learners to use, but few of them offer such beautiful compositions of both languages and authentic cultural presentation of Chinese proverb stories. This is quite a useful book for all Mandarin learners and even heritage speakers to have!
Good book for American born Chinese
My daughter was born here, and is learning Chinese several hours a week.
Although she is good in reading and writing, but she never knew there are so many proverbs, nor was she interested.
Since she had this book, she starts to compare Chinese proverb to English one. This summer, she even brings this book with her to the camp.
This audiobook is incredibly useful for the intermediate level - both of English and Chinese. The reading is slow enough to be followable for the less than advanced learner, and yet it is not tedious. I don't know of any other material that fits this niche.
The readers of both languages speak extremely clearly, and the subject matter is interesting, even charming! The listening experience for me is very engaging because I get to understand what will be said in Chinese, where I have some, but not all, of the requisite vocabulary. From the context I can thus infer the meaning of the words that are new to me (the best way of learning, I assume, since that is how a child learns). And I can repeat at will, which is of course again required for language learning. Where in many cases, repetition gets tedious, this is not the case here, since it is repeated listening of a story I get to understand more and more.
This is a model for language learning others should follow.
As an immigrant from China, I like this collection very much. I am familiar with all those Chinese proverbs. However, when I read them in English, I felt I had entered another fictional world. I had fun reading them. Long time ago when I started learning English, I read some Chinese stories in English translation in China. It seemed to me that the languages were rigid, with no natural flow. Now, when I read the English in this book, I felt I was listening to an American person telling me the Chinese stories. Besides enjoying the stories, I also learned how to express certain Chinese meanings in English. I recommended this book to my Chinese friend who has a daughter born in the US. Both she and her daughter enjoyed the book, especially her daughter who has learned many Chinese proverbs from the book. I highly recommend this book to all people who are interested in Chinese culture or Chinese language. Also it’s a good book for Chinese people who are learning English!
